Spears and Federline’s custody battle erupted in late 2007 after Spears was caught driving her sons around while her driver’s license was suspended. A judge granted Kevin Federline full custody of both children. Britney had to hand over Sean Preston and Jayden James to her ex-husband and was only allowed to see them on specific dates.

In January 2008, Spears had a scheduled visitation with her sons at her Los Angeles home. When it was time for the kids to return to their father’s house, Britney locked herself in a room with her younger son, Jayden. After a four-hour standoff with police, she was taken to the hospital on a gurney, where she was placed on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold and hospitalized. Sam Lufti also claimed to have consumed too much of the substance. During the rushed court proceedings that followed Britney’s 5150, Jamie and Lynne Spears filed a restraining order on her behalf, alleging that Adnan Ghalib and Britney’s manager Sam Lufti had attempted to control her affairs and that the pair had snuck her a cell phone while she was institutionalized. Worse, Britney’s stay in the hospital had even more negative consequences for her. She was placed under conservatorship in the same month, which meant her father Jamie would be in charge of all of her financial assets and would be responsible for her well-being.
