Halting the Ship
The polar bear continued making noises, though its roars had softened to low, urgent sounds. As the ship maintained its course westward, the bear grew increasingly agitated, pacing and pawing at the sides of the lifeboat. “Halt the ship,” Captain Reynolds commanded, and the crew promptly obeyed. Then, just as they came to a stop, the bear did something none of them had anticipated.

Without warning, the polar bear leapt back into the water, swimming in the direction from which the ship had come. The crew exchanged puzzled glances—this was certainly unexpected. They had believed they were rescuing the exhausted animal, yet now it seemed to be leaving them behind. Perhaps it had only needed a brief rest from its long journey. Still, as Captain Reynolds watched it intently, a nagging feeling settled in his chest—something about this didn’t feel right, as if he was missing an important piece of the puzzle.
