Running to help Max
John and I came down the stairs still half asleep, stumbling with every step, when we saw Max by the back door, barking with an urgency like never before. With my heart racing, I asked, “What’s wrong, boy?”, while John checked on the kids, who were watching everything with wide eyes. Perplexed, he commented that Max had never acted like that before, as if he was trying to show us something serious and impossible to ignore.

Searching the yard
I opened the back door and went out into the yard, while John grabbed his cell phone saying he was going to check the camera footage. Max was right behind me, sniffing the air insistently, as if looking for something invisible. The night was quiet, just a gentle breeze passing through the trees, but he wouldn’t calm down; even when I rubbed his head in an attempt to quieten him, his eyes remained fixed on something I couldn’t see.
