Going deeper with Max
Lily had fun imagining that Max had secret meetings with other dogs during the night, but despite her light tone, I couldn’t laugh at the idea. Something was clearly bothering him, and I needed to find out what. “Maybe we should take a closer look at the yard,” I suggested to John, who nodded in agreement, casting a worried glance at Max. He was still restless, and we’d never seen him act like this – it was as if he was on some mysterious mission that only he understood.

Max’s midnight alarm
At three in the morning, Max started barking frantically, waking up the whole house. John, still half asleep, mumbled confusedly as he rubbed his eyes, and soon after we heard Jake ask from his room: “Mom, what’s happening?”. Lily appeared at the door, drowsy and not understanding anything, while Max, downstairs, was barking with desperation, as if trying to alert us to something important. At that moment, I realized that we needed to find out what was bothering him.
