“Well,” began Mrs. Thompson, “they say that the pets are strangely agitated, barking non-stop and making noise all the time.” Her face lit up with the excitement of the report, and I couldn’t contain my surprise: “Really?” “Yes,” she confirmed firmly, “and it’s not just the dogs – even the cats have been acting crazy.” Immediately, my thoughts turned to Max’s fixation on the yard, and I couldn’t help but wonder: was he also being affected by this strange wave of behavior in the neighborhood animals?

John laughed at the stories and, waving his spatula in the air, dismissed them: “Coincidence, if you ask me,” before turning his attention back to the grill. I, however, wasn’t so convinced. Max’s strange attitudes seemed to coincide too much with the rumors circulating around the neighborhood. “Maybe,” I murmured, staring at him while he remained attentive to the yard, as if he were keeping a secret that only he could understand. And despite John’s lightness, the restlessness inside me only grew.
