Lily, giggling, pulled out her cell phone to record the scene, delighted by Max’s frenetic performance. “This is so funny!” she exclaimed, as she filmed the dog’s every zigzag and leap. His light laughter brought unexpected relief to that tense moment, while John, shaking his head with a half-smile, tried to retrieve the spatula dropped on the barbecue. Joining Jake to calm Max
Driven by curiosity, I joined Jake by the fence, trying to calm Max down with a gentle pat on the head. “It’s okay, buddy, what’s going on?” I murmured, while he remained alert. Panting beside me, Jake smiled and said, “Max just wants to keep us entertained!” The lightness of his remark brought some relief, and as I held Max’s collar, I felt strangely grateful for the commotion he had caused. The conversation between the guests flowed again, and Max eventually sat down, but his eyes fixed on the fence made it clear that his attention was still outside.
