Jake observes Max’s behavior
“Why is Max always growling in the backyard, Mom?” asked Jake one afternoon, frowning in confusion. I followed his gaze and saw Max circling the window once again, staring at the backyard with unwavering attention. “I don’t know, darling,” I replied sincerely, sharing his strangeness. “Maybe he thinks there’s something out there,” I added, and Jake nodded slowly, continuing to watch Max with the same mixture of curiosity and concern that I felt.

Maybe just a wild animal
I tried to downplay the situation, imagining that it might just be a wild animal prowling around and putting Max on alert. “It’s probably a squirrel or something, don’t you think?” I said, trying more to convince myself than Jake. He just shrugged, without taking his eyes off Max. “I guess so.” Although the explanation was reasonable, something inside me remained uneasy. Max’s reactions were strangely intense, even for him, and ended up leaving us all wondering what could really be out there.
